The Columbarium at Highland Park

 00_Columbarium_101609_01.jpg

What is a columbarium?
A columbarium is a place where urns of cremated human remains (cremains) are stored (inurned) in niches, with each niche storing urns for two subscribers.

Where is HPUMC’s Columbarium located?
The Columbarium at HPUMC is located on the west end of Cox Chapel, between the end of the Chapel and the playground. Each niche in The Columbarium holds two 8-inch by 8-inch urns.

Who can use The Columbarium?
Subscriptions are limited to present or past HPUMC members and members of their immediate families, including spouses, parents and children.

09_CB_2.jpgCan I be placed with my friends and/family?
Yes, but each companion niche only holds two persons. You would need to subscribe to the total amount of niches you would need for your family.

Can I choose where my niche will be located?
The Columbarium Committee manages the niche assignments, assigning them on a first-come, first-served basis. Church-wide advertising has begun, so please subscribe now to establish your priority in reserving spaces of your choice.

How do we handle the cremation part or who handles that?
You will need a funeral home or cremation service to pick up your remains, cremate them, and deliver your cremated remains to our Columbarium on the day of your inurnment in an approved urn or the urn provided by HPUMC.

Is there a small service (maybe we request it) for when the remains are placed in the "boxes" for the columbarium? Can small memorial services be held in the columbarium area?
Yes, inurnment services will be at the Columbarium just as they are held at a graveside at any other service.  Memorial or funeral services will be held in our worship spaces in the same manner as they are currently held for our members.

What kind of identifying marker is on each niche?
When cremains have been interred into the Columbarium the name, birth date and death date will be placed on the exterior of the marble cover plate.

Can I visit anytime I want?
Is there accessibility without going through the church? Yes, the Columbarium is accessible from exterior walkways and can be visited at any time between daylight and dusk daily.

How much does a niche in The Columbarium cost?
$2,500 for inurnment of one person’s cremated remains; $5,000 for an entire niche, whether for the remains of two persons or for one person’s remains. Niche fees include opening and closing for inurnment, and perpetual care. Cost of the urn, plaque and engraving are also included in the purchase price of the niche.

How long do I have to pay?
You must pay the full amount of $2,500 per person in advance.  We do not have a payment plan.

If I move, how to sell/dispose of a previously-purchased plot?  Will the church help me?
The Columbarium Committee would need to approve the transfer of your niche to an eligible transferee.

When do I have to decide? Is it almost full or do I have time to think this over?
We plan to fill up each phase of construction of the Columbarium before we build any other phases.  The first phase will have approximately 300 companion niches.

How do I reserve a niche?
