Haiti Eye Care Clinic
An Eye Clinic was started by HPUMC's first medical mission trip to Petit Goave, Haiti, in 1976. During the years of these mission trips to Haiti, the medical teams have trained the local Haitians in various functions of the Clinic. In 1985, a Haitian doctor was recruited to see patients once a week between the mission teams' visits. The Clinic eventually developed into a medical campus of three buildings; the Clinic building for examinations/glasses, the Surgery building, and the Post-op building. The Eye Clinic now has two part-time Haitian doctors supported by HPUMC Global Outreach. The earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, destroyed the Clinic building and damaged the Surgery and Post-op buildings. Unfortunately, HPUMC's medical team was working at the Clinic then. In addition to some injuries, the team suffered the tragic loss of a team member, Jean Arnwine. It is with the memory of Jean's life-giving dedication to serving others that a new Clinic building will be built. In the meantime, a temporary shelter is being used for the Clinic. The Surgery and Post-op buildings will be repaired. With prayers and support, the Haiti Eye Clinic - which represents HPUMC's longest-running global partnership - will continue giving sight to the blind. HPUMC members Dr. Kenneth & Lila Foree have led the charge for the Haiti mission for more than 30 years. For more info, contact Lisa Stewart at stewartl@hpumc.org or 214-523-2232 .
