Where do I park?
At SMU's busy college campus, parking near Mockingbird and Hillcrest can be a challenge! When you arrive for the 9:30 or 11:00 a.m. Cornerstone service, you have three options: park in the spacious HPUMC lot beneath the SMU Meadows Museum and walk a short distance to the church building, park at the Moody Coliseum garage and take a continuous shuttle bus to and from the church, or park along the beautiful Park Cities neighborhood streets.
Where is Wesley Hall?
Wesley Hall is located in Dallas, at the southwest corner of the SMU campus, near the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Hillcrest Boulevard. Wesley Hall seats 800 for worship, with convenient access for the disabled and hearing-assist devices. Enter the Wallace Building at the covered driveway on the north side of the church. You'll find the Wesley Hall amphitheater immediately inside.
Will someone be there to answer my questions?
At Wesley Hall, you’ll find friendly people to say hello, answer any questions you have and direct you to Cornerstone. If you have kids, they can point you to Child Care and help you register your children. We've developed a good security system so you'll know your kids are safe and well cared for. While we have tremendous children’s programming during the worship hour, please know that your children are always welcome to worship with you at Cornerstone. You'll notice that most everyone is dressed comfortably, in anything from "office casual" to jeans and sneakers. You're cordially invited to have donuts, juice and coffee between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. at the weekly Cornerstone Café in the hallway just outside Great Hall. Churchwide information is available at the Information Booth in the lobby area.
What can I expect on my first visit to Cornerstone?
When you enter our beautiful state-of-the-art Wesley Hall (with seats for 800 worshippers, including easy access for the disabled and hearing-assist devices), you'll receive a copy of the weekly worship bulletin with an agenda for the day's service, a scripture passage for the day, and information on how to contact the Cornerstone Worship Team. You'll notice the bulletin includes a registration card, which is an easy way for us to get better acquainted; you can ask for any kind of information or assistance using the card. You'll see Prayer Request boxes at the top of the aisles, and you’re invited to request prayer for any reason.
Before the service begins, you'll see large-screen video announcements of church-related events and become better acquainted with the astonishing variety of opportunities to worship and become more involved with the life of Highland Park UMC. During the service, video screens are used to project scripture and song lyrics so that you can directly participate in worship as you feel comfortable. The service begins with some upbeat music from our superb Cornerstone Band, followed by a welcome and introduction to the theme of the service. Someone will pray and read the day's scripture, and the pastor will deliver the message. The Cornerstone Band does a great job leading our praise and worship music with a contemporary feel (keyboards, drums, guitars and vocalists). Methodists are a singing people, and song is a vital component of our worship!
Offerings are taken at Cornerstone services, but please be our guest on your first visit, with no pressure to give. Regular attendees will place their contributions in the offering baskets, which are passed around after the sermon. We hope you'll drop your registration card in an offering basket, so that we can be in touch and respond to any information you request. Church is about God and worship, but it's also about community and friendship, and we want everyone to experience a genuine warmth and friendliness at Cornerstone.
Is Cornerstone a stand-alone church?
Cornerstone is the Contemporary Worship community of Highland Park United Methodist Church. Our two worship services are among NINE Sunday morning worship opportunities at HPUMC!
How do I find out what's going on at the church?
Each week we run activity announcements on video screens in the half-hour before each service. These announcements let you know what’s going on around the church. You can also find out what’s going on by reading The Tower, our weekly church newsletter, or by stopping by one of two information centers at the church. Of course, the internet is the best way to learn about everything that is happening in the life of the church. In addition to cornerstoneworship.org, visit the main church website at hpumc.org
How do I find a Sunday School class?
HPUMC offers a huge array of Sunday School classes. There are classes for all age groups. Click here for a listing of classes, or stop by our information centers for class times and descriptions.
What do Methodists believe?
United Methodists profess an historic Protestant Christian faith. We encourage you to read all about Methodism at the website of the United Methodist Church, attend any of our worship services, or take a class on Methodism here at the church. We hope you will always be eager to ask questions about the denomination.
